Booster Pump for a Three-Storey House: Planning the Top Floor First

In a three-storey house the top-floor shower is the hardest tap to serve. Plan the booster pump around it and the floors below usually take care of themselves.

A three-storey house asks more of its water system than a single-storey one. Water has to climb further, the pipe runs are longer, and the bathroom on the top floor is often the last to get a decent flow. When we size a booster pump for this kind of home, we start at the top and work down.

Why the top floor sets the target

Height costs pressure

Every metre that water rises uses up some of the pressure available at the bottom of the pipe. In a three-storey link house or semi-D, the top-floor shower head can sit many metres above the tank outlet or the incoming main. The ground floor kitchen may feel fine while the master bathroom upstairs only trickles.

The longest run is usually the weakest

Pipes lose pressure through bends, fittings and length. The top-floor bathroom is normally at the end of the longest run, so it feels every elbow and valve along the way. If the pump is planned to give that bathroom a comfortable flow, the shorter runs below generally do well too.

Signs your top floor is under-served

  • The upstairs shower is weak even when no one else is using water.
  • Pressure drops sharply when two or more taps run together.
  • Flow upstairs changes through the day, stronger at night and weaker at peak hours.
  • Water heaters on the top floor cut out because flow is too low to trigger them.

Planning the booster pump around the top floor

Count the taps that run together

The most useful number for us is not how many bathrooms you have, but how many outlets run at the same time on a busy morning. Three showers at once on two upper floors is a very different job from one shower and a kitchen tap. Tell us honestly how the household uses water and we can recommend an HP rating that fits.

Where the pump sits matters

Many three-storey homes keep the water tank in the roof space, with the pump either beside the tank or at ground level near the incoming line. Each layout has its own piping. A clear photo of the pump spot and the pipes running in and out tells us more than a long description.

Packages that suit most terrace and link houses

Our Tsunami supply and install packages are stated for landed and terrace homes with everyday household demand: 0.50HP at RM1,800; 0.75HP at RM2,000 and 1.00HP at RM2,200. If you would rather go with the premium brand, Grundfos packages are 0.50HP at RM3,600; 0.75HP at RM3,800 and 1.00HP at RM4,000. Every package covers the pump unit, professional installation, basic wiring, and pressure and function testing. You can compare them on our booster pump packages.

What to check before you message us

Photos that help us size the pump

  • The spot where the pump will go, with some space around it in the frame.
  • The pipes going into and out of the tank or existing pump.
  • The nearest power point, so we can see what basic wiring involves.
  • If there is an old pump, a close photo of its label.

Things we quote separately

Some homes need more than a straight swap. Pipe modification, extra electrical wiring and taking out an existing pump are quoted separately after we see the photos. Price depends on property type, pump size, existing piping and how easy the spot is to reach, so photos keep the quote accurate.

Already bought a pump?

If you have your own pump, installation only is RM800 per installation. That covers installing the pump, basic wiring, a test run and commissioning.

Three-storey homes across Malaysia

Common layouts we see in enquiries

Three-storey terraces and semi-Ds are common in many city suburbs, from the older estates of Cheras to newer areas around Petaling Jaya and the wider Kuala Lumpur area. The housing types differ, but the top-floor question is the same. Enquiries are welcome from anywhere in Malaysia; send the address with your photos and we will tell you whether a visit can be arranged.
