Adding a Whole-House Water Filter? Where the Booster Pump Goes
A whole-house filter adds resistance to your water line. Where it sits relative to the booster pump decides whether your taps still feel strong afterwards.
Whole-house water filters are a popular upgrade, but every filter cartridge adds some resistance to the water flowing through it. In a home that already has borderline pressure, adding a filter can make the upstairs shower noticeably weaker. Planning where the booster pump and the filter sit, and in what order, makes a real difference.
Why a filter changes the pressure picture
Filters add resistance
Water has to push through the filter media. A clean cartridge adds a modest pressure drop; a clogged one adds much more. In a gravity-fed home, where pressure comes only from the height of the roof tank, there is little spare pressure to lose.
The drop grows as the cartridge fills
A filter that seems fine on day one can slowly choke flow as it traps sediment. Many homeowners notice the shower getting weaker over months and blame the pump, when the cartridge is simply due for a change.
Signs the filter is affecting flow
- Flow got weaker soon after the filter went in.
- Pressure recovers for a while after a cartridge change, then drops again.
- The filter housing gauge, if it has one, shows a growing difference between inlet and outlet.
Where the booster pump usually goes
Common order in a tank-fed home
In many tank-fed homes, the order runs tank, then booster pump, then whole-house filter, then the house. Placed this way, the pump draws freely from the tank, and the filter has pumped pressure behind it to push water through the media. The exact layout depends on your existing piping, so treat this as a common pattern rather than a rule for every house.
When the filter sits before the pump
Some homes have a filter on the incoming line before the tank, for example a sediment filter near the meter. That filter works on mains pressure, which is a different situation. What matters most for the booster pump is that nothing restricts its suction side too much, since a starved pump struggles to deliver.
Leave room for maintenance
Filter cartridges need changing and pumps occasionally need attention. Valves on both sides of the filter and unions on the pump make each one easier to isolate. A bypass around the filter lets water keep flowing while a cartridge is changed. If your layout needs pipe modification to make this work, it is quoted separately after we see photos.

Tell us about the filter
When you message us, mention the filter: whether it is already installed or planned, where it sits, and how many housings it has. A photo of the housings and any label helps. We factor this in when recommending the HP rating, together with the property type, number of floors and how many taps run at once.
Packages to compare
Tsunami supply and install packages are RM1,800 for 0.50HP, RM2,000 for 0.75HP and RM2,200 for 1.00HP. Grundfos, the premium brand option, is RM3,600 for 0.50HP, RM3,800 for 0.75HP and RM4,000 for 1.00HP. Each covers the pump unit, professional installation, basic wiring, and pressure and function testing. Browse the booster pump packages to compare. Installation only for your own pump is RM800.
What we do not supply
We focus on booster pumps. If the filter itself still needs installing, plan that with your filter supplier and share the layout with us so the pump position fits around it.
Filters and pumps in different homes
Homes we hear from
Whole-house filters turn up in all kinds of homes, from terraces in Subang Jaya and Puchong to family homes in Kota Kinabalu. The pump-and-filter question is much the same everywhere. Enquiries are welcome from anywhere in Malaysia; we check your address on WhatsApp before booking.
Send us the layout
Photograph the tank, the pump spot, the filter housings and the pipes between them, and tell us your property type, floors and taps used at once. We will recommend the HP rating and package price, then arrange installation, wiring and a pressure test. WhatsApp us now
