How to Read a Water Pump Nameplate Before You Message Us
The small metal or sticker label on your pump says a lot about what it was sized for. Here is what each line usually means and how to photograph it for us.
Most water pumps carry a nameplate: a small metal plate or printed sticker on the motor body. It is easy to ignore, but it is the quickest way for us to understand what your current pump was meant to do. A clear photo of it often answers half our questions before we ask them.
The lines that matter most
HP and kW: the size of the motor
Motor size is usually shown in horsepower (HP), kilowatts (kW) or both. As a rough guide, 0.37kW is about 0.50HP, 0.55kW is about 0.75HP and 0.75kW is about 1.00HP. This tells us the size class your home has been running on. It is a starting point, not the final answer, because the right size depends on how many taps you run at once and how high the water has to go.
Voltage and phase: what the power supply looks like
Household pumps in Malaysia are commonly single-phase, marked with something like 220–240V and 1~ or 1PH. Larger commercial or factory pumps may be three-phase, often marked 380–415V and 3~ or 3PH. Phase matters because a three-phase pump cannot simply be wired into a normal house socket. If your label shows three-phase, tell us, because it changes what the wiring involves.
Hz, current and IP rating
- Hz: the supply frequency, normally 50Hz here.
- A (amps): the current the motor draws, which helps with checking the wiring and breaker.
- IP rating: how well the motor is sealed against dust and water, useful when a pump sits outdoors or on a roof.
Flow and head: what the pump was built to push
Head (H) in metres
Head describes how high a pump can push water, usually shown as a range such as Hmax or H in metres. A taller house, or a tank sitting low with taps high above it, needs more head. If your top floor is weak and the label shows a modest head figure, that is a clue.
Flow (Q) in litres per minute or m³/h
Flow is how much water the pump moves. It is often shown as Qmax or a range. Flow and head trade off against each other: a pump gives its highest flow at low head and less flow as head rises. We read the two together rather than on their own.
Labels that have faded
Older pumps on rooftops often have labels bleached by the sun. Photograph what is left anyway. Even a brand name and a partial model line can help, and a photo of the whole pump from the side shows its size and pipe connections.
How to photograph the nameplate
Get the shot right the first time
- Switch the pump off at the isolator before getting close.
- Wipe dust off the label with a dry cloth.
- Shoot straight on, close enough that the text fills most of the frame.
- Turn on the phone torch if the pump sits in a dark corner, and angle it to avoid glare.
- Add one wider photo showing the pump, the pipes in and out, and the power point.
What the photo tells us, and what it does not
The nameplate tells us the size class, the power supply and roughly what the pump was designed to push. It does not tell us how your household uses water, how many floors you have or whether the piping has issues. That is why we also ask for property type, floor count and how many taps run at once.
When the old pump has failed
If the pump has stopped working, repair or diagnosis is quoted after we see photos and a short video of it running or trying to start. Taking out the existing pump during a replacement is quoted separately.
From label to recommendation
How we turn your photos into a package
With the nameplate and site photos, we recommend an HP rating and a package. Tsunami supply and install packages are RM1,800 for 0.50HP, RM2,000 for 0.75HP and RM2,200 for 1.00HP. Grundfos, the premium brand option, is RM3,600 for 0.50HP, RM3,800 for 0.75HP and RM4,000 for 1.00HP. Each covers the pump unit, professional installation, basic wiring, and pressure and function testing. See the full package list. If you already own a pump, installation only is RM800.
Send it over
Enquiries come in from all over, whether a terrace in Shah Alam, a shophouse in Klang or a home in Johor Bahru. We check your address on WhatsApp before booking. Send the nameplate photo, a wide shot of the pump and a short note on your home. Send nameplate photo
